Sleep Stories Commission for Durham Book Festival

A podcast series inspired by my research on the contemporary sleep crisis

Blending sleep science and fiction, each episode features an exclusive short story by a prominent British writer introduced by a leading sleep scholar.

I helped Durham Book Festival devise the podcast concept and the brief for the writers, advised the writers on sleep science and research, and sourced the sleep experts who introduced the stories. The writers commissioned for the first season of “Sleep Stories” (2021) were Salena Godden, Jenn Ashworth, and Andrew McMillan. Their stories were introduced by neuroscientist and writer Erik Hoel, Professor of Sleep Science Jason Ellis, and me. The writers commissioned for the second season of “Sleep Stories”, launching on 11th October 2026, are Romalyn Ante, Naomi Booth, and Sarah Hall. Their stories will be introduced by Professor of Political Science and Philosophy Cressida J. Heyes, M.D. Pam Alfonso-Miller, and me.

Below you can watch “Sleep Stories and the Science of Sleep”, a video collecting highlights of the 2021 launch event, which I chaired.

“Sleep Stories” season 1 received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement 892459. The Agency is not responsible for any use that may be made of the information the “Sleep Stories” commission contains.
